The Hope Of Ogdenites Is Bringing Ogden Alive!
Written By Brandon Stephenson Posted 12/20/2008
It is exciting to see so many wonderful things going on in our community! With the Junction under
construction, the popularity of 25th Street and the amphitheater continuing to grow, the nearing completion of the
parkway, the river project, the announcement of a Wal-Mart to be built, the announcement of retail big box interest
on 12th Street, the continuing success of our trail system along the bench including the connection of the north
and south ends of the Bonneville Shorline Trail via the tunnel completed recently under 12th Street, Ogden is full of
exciting times and events.
I was walking down town recently on a weekday evening and there were people. Yes, I said PEOPLE! Since
the vibrancy of our downtown is of paramount importance to the future of our great city it is exciting to see people
walking the once vacant streets because there are finally some places and venues that make a trip into downtown
Ogden worth the time.
In large part, we owe the current excitement about Ogden to those within our city and many without that
recognize that Ogden is in one of the most prime recreational locations in the country and probably the world. As
we re-make our city into a high adventure recreational mecca, every little piece is important.
However, the most important piece that will ultimately determine whether or not we succeed is how we as
Ogdenites see ourselves. It is time that we look around, see what we have, who we are and what we believe.
Believe that we can and will be able to do what it takes to continue down the road that will bring our community
economic prosperity and give us each the opportunity to hand off something to our children that will help them to
treasure Ogden as much as we do. We will be truly succeeding in our efforts when our own children choose to
make Ogden their home because of the many wonderful things that we share as a community. Some already do,
but far too many find homes elsewhere, because in recent decades there has been little to keep them here.
I have heard some say that we should not be focusing so much time on economic development, especially
with a weakening national economy. Further, we should not spend tax dollars on high adventure infrastructure that
supports the vision of a high adventure recreational mecca because there are other things that are more important.
What is more important than bringing a vision that embodies a hope of future success for Ogden City? There
are very few things that can excite people like the hope for something better for everyone. If you have doubts that
a stronger economic outlook will benefit all of us...I ask you to remember the adage that says "The rising tide
raises all ships". In fact, whether we are personally engaged or not in the specific pieces of high adventure, such
as biking, hiking, climbing, archery, horseback riding, sky diving, surfing, skiing, kayaking, water skiing,
motor-cross, etc., the economics of having many others that are will help keep our city vibrant and lively and bring
before unknown opportunities to generate revenue that will reduce our tax burdens and offer us each some
wonderful experiences that are enjoyed by very few people anywhere. Thus, the power of supporting the vision for
high adventure recreation as the new economic base of Ogden City.
