City Youth Council Initiative
Overview Updated 02/08/2007
The Ogden Youth City Council was created to help our youth to become engaged in the workings of
local government at an early age and encourage them each to continue their service into the future.
The Youth City Council will plan and organize city-wide service projects that will include as many youth
as possible. Members of this Council will also be chosen to assist on various city committees in order
for the city to better get the input from our youth. It is my hope that this group will also play a pivotal
role in the creation of a Youth Master Plan that will give direction to city leaders now and into the future.
This Council was created based upon some important principals.
1) The Youth City Council is all inclusive. Anyone who chooses to be a part of this Council, can be.
This group will elect its own leadership, which consist of five executive officers, up to 10 voting members
and up to 10 alternate voting members. The number of leadership chosen will depend upon the size of
the group of youth involved.
2) The youth involved will run the Youth City Council. This special group of youth will be given general
guidelines under which to base their activities. They will decide schedule, what they want to accomplish,
where they will get their resources and how they will accomplish their goals. This program will be an
exercise in government getting things done in the community and the service it requires.
3) The Youth City Council will be given the tools they need in order to accomplish their purpose. The
adult advisory body of the Youth City Council includes, a member of the City Council, the Ogden School
Board, the St. Joseph's High School Board, the DaVinci Academy School Board and a member of the
Ogden City Mayor's Administration. This advisory board will offer training, resources and guidance as
necessary to assist this group in accomplishing their goals.
The Youth City Council will teach life lessons to our youth and help to better prepare them for a future
of community service and involvement!
Recently, the new Youth City Council was officially appointed by Mayor Godfrey, confirmed by a vote of
the City Council and sworn in by the Ogden City Recorder. See press release.
